UTPA TENNIS SQUADS FACE TOUGH SCHEDULES

EDINBURG, TX-A challenging schedule featuring matches against opponents from within and outside the region awaits The University of Texas-Pan American tennis teams this spring.

Each team will play six home matches, while competing against some of the top teams in the region.

"I'm excited about this year's schedule," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "It gives both our men and women the opportunity to play tough competition, and it's also a schedule we can be successful with. It will give both of our teams the opportunity to be nationally ranked, and to have successful seasons."

Chapman said that this year's schedule is balanced. "Last year, it seemed as though all of our matches were against teams that were either much higher-ranked than we were, or weren't as strong as we were," Chapman said. "This year, we have some matches against teams that are highly-ranked, and some we should win, but the majority of our matches this year are against teams that we are evenly matched against. When most of your matches are against teams that you have a chance to beat, you find out what your team is made of."

The Broncs, who are members of the Southland Conference in men's tennis, will host conference matches against defending SLC Tournament champion Texas-San Antonio, Lamar and Centenary while traveling to play defending regular season SLC champ Texas-Arlington and Southeastern Louisiana. The Broncs will also travel to face perennial national power Texas A&M, as well as visiting New Mexico State and Air Force. Texas-Pan American will play home-and-home against traditional rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and will also host St. Mary's (TX) as well as Laredo College.

A good schedule also awaits the Lady Broncs. UT Pan American will host Louisiana-Monroe and McNeese State of the Southland Conference, fellow independent Centenary and will play home-and-home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lady Broncs will also host St. Mary's (TX) and Laredo College, travel to play perennial powers Southern Methodist and Houston, and travel to New Mexico State and Air Force.

Both teams will have opportunities to prove themselves. "Our toughest men's match is against Texas A&M on the opening weekend," Chapman said. "We go to New Mexico State, we go to Air Force, and we play UTSA at home, and they (UTSA) are the team that won the Southland Conference Tournament last year and qualified for the NCAAs. We have three conference matches at home, and we also play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Among the highlights of the women's schedule are playing SMU and Houston, and we also travel to New Mexico State, UTEP and Air Force. We play (Texas A&M) Corpus Christi at home, along with Louisiana-Monroe, Centenary and McNeese State. It's exciting that both teams are able to get out and play some teams outside of our region that we normally wouldn't see."
