MANGELSCHOTS EARNS SLC POW AWARD
EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team has received its second consecutive Southland Conference tennis honor.
Junior Tom Mangelschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) is the second Bronc this season to be named Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Mangelschots went 2-0 in his two singles matches, and his 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against Luis Moris at number two singles clinched the Broncs' 4-3 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday. The Broncs trailed, 3-0, before winning at four, five and six singles to set up Mangelschots' decisive victory. He also defeated Spencer Read of St. Mary's (TX) at number two singles, 6-2, 6-1, in Texas-Pan American's home opener last Wednesday. The Broncs won that match, 7-0.
"Tom is as deserving a recipient as there can be," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "The match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came down to the his singles match, and Tom was hurt in the first set, played through the pain, and came up with a huge win for himself, our team and our program. He gave the team everything he had, and came up with a big win. I'm proud of Tom and the way he played, and I'm glad he had an opportunity to receive this award."
