BRONCS. LADY BRONCS SPLIT
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO-The University of Texas-Pan American's tennis teams split a pair of late night matches at the Cadet Gymnasium Indoor Tennis Courts at Air Force Saturday evening.
The Broncs defeated Boston University, 5-1, while the Lady Broncs fell to Wyoming, 5-2, in matches that did not end until after 2:00 a.m. Central Standard Time.
Texas-Pan American won five of six singles. Sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) defeated Adam Siegel, 6-2, 6-0, at number two singles, freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF International School) downed Nick Ganias, 6-1, 6-0, at number three, freshman Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) defeated Noel Moossa, 6-1, 6-3, at number four, senior Neil Barraclough (Coventry, England/Cardinal Newman HS/Seward County CC) defeated J.P. Debbink, 6-1, 6-2, at number five, and freshman D.J. Zhanel (Ennis, TX/Ennis HS) defeated Jason Vinoles, 6-0, 6-1, at number six. The match began and ended with singles, due to the late start.
The Lady Broncs dropped three close doubles matches, and lost the doubles point. Sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) defeated Jennifer Hancock, 7-6, 2-6, (10-8) at number four, and junior Jessica Brown (Sioux City, IA/North HS) downed Gwen Moser at number six when Moser was unable to play after being injured in doubles. At number five, junior Alana Breen (Whistler, BC/Whistler Secondary) lost to Megan Williams in a super-tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, (10-5).
"Our men played well in the singles," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "We had a long day, starting at about eight in the morning, and finishing after 1 a.m. (Mountain Time). We had to sit around a long time between matches. After we lost to Air Force Friday, our men turned it around and had a successful weekend."
The Broncs improved to 6-4, while the Terriers fell to 1-2. Wyoming improved to 5-3, while the Lady Broncs fell to 2-12. Texas-Pan American will conclude their trip with matches against Air Force and Southern Utah.
