UTPA TENNIS TEAMS DEFEAT LAREDO COMMUNITY COLLEGE
EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American tennis teams picked up exhibition wins over Laredo Community College Thursday afternoon at the Cox Tennis Center. The Broncs swept five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches en route to a 6-1 victory, while the Lady Broncs swept all six matches played and scored a 7-0 victory.
"The women's team played well," said UTPA Assistant Coach Elizabeth Middleton. "We stressed high intensity, and we saw it in the matches today."
The Lady Broncs picked up three wins by default, since LCC only had four singles entrants and two doubles teams. UTPA won the doubles point, and clinched the victory when senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) defeated Elba Martinez at number one singles. Junior Alana Breen (Whistler, BC/Whistler Secondary) defeated Nancy Ortiz at number four singles to earn her third consecutive singles win.
"Elisabet played very well," said Middleton. "She came out to win. The whole team played to win today."
Senior Neil Barraclough's (Coventry, England/Cardinal Newman HS/Seward County CC) win at number five singles for the Broncs clinched the victory for the men's team.
"The men had a few come from behind wins," said Middleton. "Neil started slowly, but came back to win. Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) had a close match, but turned it up in the third set. The men's team played well, and took care of the job."
The Texas-Pan American men's tennis team will return to action Friday, when they visit Air Force. The Lady Broncs will host Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
