UTPA TENNIS TEAMS FALL
SAN ANTONIO, TX-Both of The University of Texas-Pan American's tennis teams dropped their matches Sunday.
The Broncs lost their Southland Conference opener to Southeastern Louisiana, 5-2, while the women fell to Southwest Texas State, 7-0.
After losing close matches at number one and number three doubles to lose the doubles point, Texas-Pan American had to come back after losing the first set in each of the six singles matches. Senior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis-PA) defeated Matt Tate at number three, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, and freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) defeated Paul Birkett at number five, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Junior Tom Mangelschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) lost a close match at number two, falling to Olivier Nussbaum, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
"I was disappointed with the loss, we were just outplayed today," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "We came out and got in a hole early, came back and made it a close match, but we weren't able to pull it out. Matt played a great match at number three, and Oliver played well at number five. Tom lost a very close match at number two. You have to give Southeastern credit, they played better than we did."
The Lions improved to 3-4, 1-1 in SLC play, while the Broncs fell to 4-3 and 0-1.
Only junior Alana Breen (Whistler, BC/Whistler Secondary) was victorious for the Lady Broncs, and her 7-5, 6-2 win over Celina Gomez at number seven did not count towards the team score. Senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) lost a close match at number one singles, falling to Tina Klemenc, 7-6, 6-3.
"We just couldn't get over the hump," said Assistant Coach Elizabeth Middleton, "We didn't have enough confidence to finish things off. Elisabet played very well in singles, her opponent was very good."
The Bobcats improved to 2-3, while UTPA fell to 2-9.
The Texas-Pan American tennis teams will return to action when
they host Laredo Community College in an exhibition match Thursday afternoon.
