UTPA TENNIS TEAMS DEFEAT ST. MARY'S

EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American tennis teams defeated St. Mary's University Wednesday at the Cox Tennis Center. The Broncs defeated the Rattlers, 7-0, while the Lady Broncs downed St. Mary's, 5-2. The Broncs improved to 3-2, while the women's team improved to 2-5. SMU's men's and women's teams both dropped to 0-1.

The Broncs swept through singles and doubles play, while the Lady Broncs won five of the six singles matches after losing two of three matches and dropping the doubles point.

Freshman Laura Boskovich (San Jose, CA/St. Francis HS) had to go three games to win her match at number three singles for the Lady Broncs. She defeated Thuy Phan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) clinched the match for UT Pan American when she defeated Alexis Carmona at number four singles, 6-3, 6-1. Julie Fife (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) and Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) picked up the lone doubles win for the Lady Broncs, defeating Phan and Caroline Montgomery at number three, 8-6.

Sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) played the closest match for the Broncs. He came from behind to win the first set, and defeated Chris West at number one, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis-PA) and freshman Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) played for the first time this season at number two doubles and defeated Spencer Read and Brad Holmes, 8-6.

"On the women's side, we got a slow start in doubles, but we played much better in singles," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "I was pleased that we won, and, hopefully, it will give us some confidence going into our matches this weekend. The men also played better in singles. We picked it up after the doubles. I hope it gives us a boost, because we have a tough match this weekend against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi."

The Texas-Pan American tennis teams will return to action this weekend. The women visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday afternoon, then play Sam Houston State and Southern at Corpus Christi Saturday. The Broncs host TAMU-CC Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
