BRONCS, LADY BRONCS FALL

LAS CRUCES, NM-The University of Texas-Pan American's tennis teams dropped both matches on the final day of their three-match road trip to New Mexico.

The Broncs lost to Tennessee Tech, 5-2, while the women lost to TTU, 4-3, at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.

Both matches went down to the wire. In the men's match, after the Golden Eagles earned the doubles point, TTU took four of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. The Eaglettes took the doubles point, and TTU and the Lady Broncs split the singles matches, with each team winning three.

"The doubles point really determined the winner of the men's match," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "It came down to the number two doubles match, and we were on serve at 5-6, and got broke. In singles, we had the momentum at four, five, and six, and they had it at one, two, and three. (Freshman) Oliver (Steil, Brunssum, The Netherlands, AF North International School) was up, 9-8, in his supertiebreaker, and the guy he was playing made an incredible shot. (Freshman) Nik (Porter, Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) and (sophomore) Jeremy (Salvo, Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) had really good weekends for us."

"I was really proud of the women," Chapman continued. "(Sophomore) Ana (Pena, McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) and (senior) Elisabet (Mateos, Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) played really well, and played really smart tennis. Tennessee Tech just came up with the shots when they needed them, and we didn't."

The Broncs fell to 2-2 with the loss, while Tennessee Tech improved to 3-3. The Lady Broncs dropped to 1-5 with the defeat, while the Eaglettes improved to 1-2. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they host St. Mary's in men's and women's action Wednesday afternoon.
