TENNIS TEAMS DEFEAT CATAMOUNTS

SAN ANTONIO, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's tennis teams swept their tennis matches Thursday afternoon.

The Broncs defeated Vermont, 7-0, while the Lady Broncs also downed UVM, 5-2 at the University of Texas-San Antonio.

Sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Rowe HS) won twice, teaming with senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) to win at number one doubles, then winning her singles match in straight sets.

The Broncs didn't lose a set, and won for the fourth consecutive time. Sophomores Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) and Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) and freshmen Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) and Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) each won twice without losing a set.

"Our women rebounded well from their loss Monday," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "We competed hard today, and played with a little more confidence than we did Monday. Ana played very well. She did a good job in singles, playing smart and attacking."

"Our guys played well, and they are in a pretty good rhythm right now," said Chapman. "Tom and Filip both had leads in the second set of their singles matches. Filip had to fight hard to close out his match, and Tom lost the second set, but he came back and won it in a super tie-breaker. Jeremy played very well in both singles and doubles. Hopefully, we can keep our momentum going into our first home conference match Saturday."

The Broncs improved to 8-4 with the victory, while the Catamount men dropped to 11-9. The Lady Broncs improved to 4-14, while UVM's women fell to 7-10.

The Broncs will return to action when they host Lamar Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in a Southland Conference match. The Lady Broncs will host Centenary April 5th.
