SAN ANTONIO, TX - The University of Texas-Pan American's men's
tennis team came away with a championship at the Texas-San Antonio Sonterra
Invitational Sunday.
Gary Bianco (Fr./Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) won the consolation championship
with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Garrett Snyder of Texas. Bianco advanced to the final
when his semi-final opponent failed to show up. "Gary had a really good
match," said UTPA Head Coach Eduardo Provencio. "He is playing well
and starting to figure out the game plan we have been working on."
In doubles action, Rehman Esmail (So./Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/Dr.
Charles Best Secondary/North Carolina State) and Jeremy Salvo (Jr./Coquitlam,
British Columbia, Canada/Centennial Secondary) lost a tough match, 9-8 (7-2)
to Andy Mack and Antonio Ruiz of Texas. "Rehman and Jeremy played a great
match," said Provencio. I'm really proud of how things are coming along.
We are really positioning ourselves to do well at the ITA Regionals in a few
weeks."
The Broncs are off until Oct. 24-26, when they compete in the Omni Hotel ITA
Southwest Regionals in Fort Worth, Texas.
