FORT WORTH, TEXAS - The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team will play tomorrow in the Omni Hotel ITA Southwest Regionals. The Broncs saw two of their singles players remain in the hunt for titles.
In the round of 32 championship bracket, Jeremy Salvo (Jr./Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/Centennial Secondary) beat Khaled El Dorry of Texas A&M, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. He will play the number six seed, Alex Menichini of Texas Christian, at 9:00 a.m. Sunday in the round of 16.
In the consolation bracket, Sebastian Aspillaga (Jr./Santiago, Chile/Lycee Francaise de Chili/Louisville) won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 over Garrett Snyder of Texas in the round of 64. He then beat Oscar Roman of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-5, 5-7 (10-4) in the round of 32. Aspillaga will play Matt Loucks of Texas A&M in the round of 16 Sunday morning. Tom Mangelschots (Sr./Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) was defeated by Jason Mok of Rice, 6-0, 6-1, Armando Martinez (Jr./San Antonio, Texas/Canyon HS/West Texas A&M) lost to Robert Gallman of Texas Christian 6-0, 6-0 and Oliver Steil (So./Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) fell to Michael Innerebner of Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-0.
Gary Bianco (Fr./Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) won his consolation match against Ron McNeil of Prairie View A&M, 6-2, 6-2, and Nik Porter (So./Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) defeated Zack Malmgren of Texas A&M, 7-6, 0-6 (10-5). In the consolation round of 32, Bianco lost to Rodrigo Gabriel of Rice, 7-5, 6-2, and Porter was defeated by Ivan Kovalev of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, Rehman Esmail (So./Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary/North Carolina State) and Salvo fell in the championship bracket round of 16, 8-2, to Hubert Chodkiewicz and Joe Morris of the University of Texas.
In the consolation bracket round of 32, Porter and Steil had
a bye, while Aspillaga and Bianco lost to Will Clinton and Andy Mack of the
University of Texas, 8-4. In the round of 16, Porter and Steil were defeated,
8-5 by Robert Gallman and Andrew Ulrich of Texas Christian.
