FORT WORTH, TEXAS - The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team had a good showing at the Omni Hotel ITA Southwest Regionals, which ended Sunday at Texas Christian University. "I thought we played well," said UTPA Men's Tennis Head Coach Eduardo Provencio. "Our performance is telling the guys that they can compete with the top teams."

In the championship bracket, Jeremy Salvo (Jr./Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/Centennial Secondary) won three matches to reach the round of 16 where he lost to the number six seed, Alex Menichini of Texas Christian, 6-3, 6-2. Salvo had beaten Robert Kirchner of Texas-San Antonio, 6-1, 6-4, Dimitrio Martinez of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-2 and Khaled El Dorry of Texas A&M, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

Sebastian Aspillaga (Jr./Santiago, Chile/Lycee Francaise de Chili/Louisville) started the tournament off with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Dash Connell of Texas A&M in the first round of the championship bracket. In the round of 64, he lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Ryan Hammond of Texas. In consolation play, Aspillaga won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 over Garrett Snyder of Texas, and beat Oscar Roman of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-5, 5-7 (10-4) in the round of 32. Aspillaga was down 3-2 to Matt Loucks of Texas A&M in the round of 16 when he retired due to an injury.

In the first round of the championship bracket, Tom Mangelschots (Sr./Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) fell to Brett Joelson of Texas A&M, 6-2, 7-5, Armando Martinez (Jr./San Antonio, Texas/Canyon HS/West Texas A&M) lost to Joe O'findo of Texas-San Antonio, 6-0, 6-1, Oliver Steil (So./Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) fell to Joe Morris of the University of Texas, 6-2, 6-3, Gary Bianco (Fr./Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) lost to Marvin Rolle of Texas A&M, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 and Nik Porter (So./Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) was defeated by David Placensia of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-3, 6-4.

In consolation play, in the round of 64, Mangelschots was defeated by Jason Mok of Rice, 6-0, 6-1. Martinez lost to Robert Gallman of Texas Christian 6-0, 6-0 and Steil fell to Michael Innerebner of Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-0.

Bianco beat Ron McNeil of Prairie View A&M, 6-2, 6-2 and Porter defeated Zack Malmgren of Texas A&M, 7-6, 0-6 (10-5). In the round of 32, Bianco lost to Rodrigo Gabriel of Rice, 7-5, 6-2 and Porter was defeated by Ivan Kovalev of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Rehman Esmail (So./Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary/North Carolina State) and Salvo beat Robert Gallman and Andrew Ulrich of Texas Christian 9-7 in the championship bracket round of 32 . They then lost, 8-2, to Hubert Chodkiewicz and Joe Morris of Texas.

Aspillaga and Bianco lost their championship bracket doubles match in the round of 8-5 to Konstantin Haerle and Vuk Rajevac of Rice University, while Porter and Steil were defeated 8-3 by Dimitrio Martinez and Ryan Vogl of Texas Tech in the round of 64.

In consolation action, Porter and Steil had a bye, while Aspillaga and Bianco lost to Will Clinton and Andy Mack of Texas 8-4. In the round of 16, Porter and Steil were defeated, 8-5 by Robert Gallman and Andrew Ulrich of Texas Christian.
