LADY BRONCS WIN THREE MATCHES ON FIRST DAY AT UTSA

FORT WORTH, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's women's tennis team won three matches on the first day of action at the Texas-San Antonio Fall Invitational at the UTSA Tennis Complex Friday.

Senior Julie Fife (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) won her fourth flight match against Viridiana Montiel of Laredo Community College, 6-4, 6-2, then lost to Amanda Ibrahim of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-4, 6-1.In the first flight, freshman Vanessa Hedinger (Therwil, Switzerland/Gymnasium Berwil) lost to Melanie Hall of Texas State-San Marcos, 7-6, 6-3, then defeated Medeja Egiz of Lee College, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) lost both of her third flight matches. She fell to Yuliani Santee of Wyoming, 6-0, 6-0, and then lost to Dzehlan Menisi of Tyler Junior College, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Alana Breen (Whistler, BC/Whistler Secondary) lost her fifth flight match to Marissa Brown of Tyler JC, 6-0, 6-1, then defeated Amanda Benavidez of Laredo CC, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) had to retire from her match against Felice Sanchez of Texas A&M-CC because of injury.

In doubles, Hedinger and Pena lost their first flight match to Jen Hancock and Yuliani Santee of Wyoming, 8-3, while Sloan and Fife lost to Leja Sirola and Margaret Potvrala of TSU-San Marcos, 8-4.

"We played quite well in doubles," said UTPA Head Coach Eduardo Provencio. "I was generally happy with the way we played. We are improving with each tournament, and we're getting ready for the spring."

The tournament will continue Saturday.
