UTPA TAKES FOUR MATCHES AT BRENTWOOD INVITATIONAL
BEAUMONT, TX—The University of Texas-Pan American men’s tennis team picked up four wins on the first day of action at the Fourth Annual Brentwood Intercollegiate Tournament at the Cardinal Courts on the Lamar University campus.
The day was highlighted by UTPA’s Filip Koziell (So., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS) winning a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals of Flight A. Koziell defeated Jorge Lopez in the opening round, winning 6-2, 4-6, (11-9), then defeated Alan Goldshuv of Lamar 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals. Jeremy Salvo (So., Coquitlam, British Columbia/Centennial Secondary) dropped a pair of matches, losing to Jakob Paulsen of Lamar, 6-0, 6-4 and Eric Subirats of Southeastern Louisiana, 6-2, 6-4. Tom Mangelschots (Jr., Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) fell to Sandy Farquaharson of Texas-San Antonio, 6-3, 6-0 and lost by default to Max Lawrence of Abilene Christian.
In flight B, Nik Porter (Fr., Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial Diocesan School) and Oliver Steil (Fr., Brunssum, Netherlands/AF North International School) of the Broncs each split their first two matches. Porter defeated Sal Taweel of ACU, 6-1, 6-1, but fell to Hedori Chaves of UTSA, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Steil upended Edgar Gonzalez of Lamar, 6-2, 6-3, but lost to Niels Buksik of Texas-Arlington, 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinals. Neil Barraclough (Sr., Coventry, England/Cardinal Newman HS/Seward County CC) dropped a pair of matches, losing to Jon Jenkin of UTSA, 6-4, 6-2, and Jason Ray of ACU, 6-3, 6-1. D. J. Zhanel (Fr., Ennis, Texas/Ennis HS) fell to Pat Abshire 7-6, 0-6, (13-11) in Flight C.
The tournament will continue with the first round of doubles. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
