BRONCS ADVANCE IN DOUBLES CONSOLATION AT BRENTWOOD INVITATIONAL

BEAUMONT, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American men’s tennis team advanced two teams in the consolation round of the Flight A doubles Saturday at the Fourth Annual Brentwood Intercollegiate Tournament at the Cardinal Courts on the Lamar University campus.

All of the Broncs competed in Flight A. After losing their first match to Trent Broach and Jason Ray of Abilene Christian, Oliver Steil (Fr., Brunssem, Netherlands/AF North International School) and D. J. Zhanel (Fr., Ennis, Texas/Ennis HS) drew a bye and advanced to the consolation semi-finals. Steil and Zhanel lost when Zhanel had to retire with his team trailing, 4-1. Filip Koziell (So., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS) and Jeremy Salvo (So., Coquitlam, British Columbia/ Centennial Secondary) were defeated by the duo of Sandy Farquharson and Niels Buksik of Texas-Arlington, 8-4., then defeated Sal Taweel and Hal Hawkins of Abilene Christian, 8-5, to advance to the consolation semi-finals. The duo of Nik Porter (Fr., Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial Diocesan School) and Neil Barraclough (Sr., Coventry, England/Cardinal Newman HS/Seward County CC) lost to Juan Pablo Alatorre and Nebojsa Murisik of Lamar University, 8-4, then fell to Eric Subirats and Matt Tate of Southeastern Louisiana, 8-6.

In singles, Koziell lost his semi-final Flight A match to Javier Carrillo of Texas-Arlington, 6-0, 7-6. In flight C, Zhanel defeated Jason Purser of Abilene Christian in a consolation match, 3-6, 6-1, (10-5). He defeated Bernardo Costa of Southeastern Louisiana in the consolation semi-finals, 6-3, 6-3, but lost in the consolation finals to Christian Oliver of Lamar, 6-3, 6-0. In Sunday’s doubles, Steil and Zhanel will face Subirats and Tate in one consolation semi-final, and Koziell and Salvo will play Paul Birket and Milos Vasovic of Southeastern Louisiana in the other.

“Filip got off to a really slow start in his singles match, and his opponent played very well,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “I thought Filip showed a lot of heart in coming back in the second set, but I was disappointed with the result. D.J. showed a lot of heart today. He played well in his first match, then ran out of gas. We played fairly well in doubles. Although Nik and Neil didn’t win, they played hard. Jeremy and Filip played pretty well. We could have two teams playing each other tomorrow in the consolation finals."
