BRONCS FALL AT TEXAS-ARLINGTON, 5-2

ARLINGTON, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's men's tennis team took four matches to three sets against Southland Conference power Texas-Arlington at the UTA Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

The Broncs and Mavericks split those four matches, but UTA won a pair of matches in straight sets and also won the doubles point to defeat Texas-Pan American, 5-2, and clinch the Southland Conference regular season championship.

Freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) and sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) defeated Javier Carrillo and Alon Goldshuv at number three doubles, 8-4. Salvo downed Niels Buksik of UTA at number four singles, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and sophomore Filip Koziell downed David Corrie at number two, 6-7, 7-6, (11-9).

However, the Mavs won the other two three-set matches. Nathan McGregor defeated junior Tom Mangelschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) at number one singles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Ian Vazquez defeated freshman Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) at number six, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Steil had his ten-match winning streak in singles snapped when he lost to Sandy Farquharson at number five singles, 6-4, 6-2.

"We played very well at number three doubles, but we didn't play as well at the other two doubles positions," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "We played hard in the singles, and Filip and Jeremy played very well, but UTA is a good team, and they came up with the shots when they needed them. We had four three-set matches, so it could have gone either way. We're disappointed to lose, but this match should give us more confidence if we play them again at the conference tournament."

The Broncs dropped to 10-5, 1-2 in SLC play with the defeat. Texas-Arlington improved to 10-5 and completed Southland Conference action with a perfect 5-0 mark.

UTPA will return to action when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday.
