“I’m disappointed with the loss,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “I feel we had a chance to beat the 59th ranked team.”
TAMU-CC won two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The duo of sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) and freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) picked up a win at number two doubles, 9-8 (8-6). With the win, Steil and Salvo improved their doubles record to 3-0.
Salvo defeated David Plasencia at number five singles, 6-3, 6-4, while senior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis) defeated Luis Morris at number three singles in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
“Losing the doubles point cost us some momentum,” said Chapman. “In singles, Matt and Jeremy played great, and Filip (Koziell) had a great battle.”
