BRONCS FALL TO ISLANDERS

CORPUS CHRISTI, TXThe University of Texas-Pan American men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to 59th ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the HEB Tennis Center Friday.  The loss drops Texas-Pan American’s record to 10-6, while the Islanders won their fifth consecutive match to improve to 13-7.

“I’m disappointed with the loss,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman.  “I feel we had a chance to beat the 59th ranked team.”

TAMU-CC won two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.  The duo of sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) and freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) picked up a win at number two doubles, 9-8 (8-6).  With the win, Steil and Salvo improved their doubles record to 3-0.

Salvo defeated David Plasencia at number five singles, 6-3, 6-4, while senior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis) defeated Luis Morris at number three singles in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

“Losing the doubles point cost us some momentum,” said Chapman.  “In singles, Matt and Jeremy played great, and Filip (Koziell) had a great battle.”

The Broncs will return to action on Saturday, when they host Centenary in a critical Southland Conference match, beginning at 10 a.m.
