2004 OUTLOOK: After rewriting the UTPA record book outdoors and earning All-American honors once outdoors and twice in cross country, the sky is the limit.COACH’S COMMENTS: “Westly has a remarkable year, earning All-American honors in cross country and outdoors He set school records from 1500 through 10,000 meters last season, showing remarkable range for a distance runner in being able to go up and down in distances. He started off this year where he left off last year, and has shown great leadership both on and off the track. I'm looking for great things from Westly.” 2003 XC: Had another outstanding season, finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships and earning All-American honors for the second consecutive year. Keating won the Chile Pepper Invitational at Arkansas, the Texas A&M-CC Splash, and the Independent Championships, repeating as Independent Runner of the Year. 2003 TRACK: Earned All-American status by finishing 11th at 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, CA June 12th......Qualified for the NCAAs at both 5,000 and 10,000 meters......Set school records at 3000 and 5000 meters indoors......Broke the UTPA 3000 meter record by 17 seconds when he ran 8:16.82 at the Cyclone National Track and Field Qualifier........Broke the school record at 5000 by 22 seconds when he ran 14:26.05 the previous day at the Alex Wilson Invitational......Holds school records outdoors at 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters.....Broke a school record that had stood for 23 years when he ran 1500 meters in 3:49.69 at the Dogwood Invitational April 13th......Broke a UTPA mark that had stood for 21 years at the Drake Relays April 24th when he ran 5000 meters in 14:12.47.......Broke the school record at 10,000 meters when he became the first Bronc to run that event in under 30 minutes, finishing in 28:41;95 at the Stanford Invitational and qualifying for the NCAAs......Finished first at 5,000 meters at the Texas Relays, Drake Relays and the UTPA Open......Won the Dogwood Invitational at 1500 meters.....Second at 5000 meters at the NCAA Midwest regional Championships.2002 CROSS-COUNTRY: Keating’s impact on the Broncs program was felt immediately as he became the Broncs first All-American in cross-country this past season. Westly covered the 10,000m run, hosted by Indiana State University in 30 minutes, 21.5 seconds. Keating finished among the top four finishers in every meet he competed in prior to the NCAA Championships. He opened the season with a 19:35 effort at the Southwest Texas Invitational. He followed that up with a victory at the San Antonio (19:35 for 4 miles) before placing fourth at the rugged Texas A&M Invitational (26:11 for 5.2 miles). Keating then opened the championship portion of the Broncs’ schedule with an astounding 2-minute 3-second margin of victory at the NCAA Division I Independents Championships. Keating’s time of 24:14 set a school record that had stood since 1990. Two weeks later Keating finished third at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships setting another school record and earning a trip the NCAA Championships with a 29:58.0 run. 2001-02: Competed in only a pair of cross-country races for UT Austin before illness and injury cut short his freshman season. He opened the season with a victory at the Texas Invitational winning by a minute in 24:25, but he failed to finish the tough, hilly, hot Pre-National Meet course at Furman, NC. Despite being sidelined for several months, Keating posted personal bests of 14:49.52 and 3:58.49. Prep: Keating was one of the Rio Grande Valley’s greatest distance runners ever winning the Texas 5A state 3200m championship in 9:10.72. He was a Footlocker Cross-Country National Finalist (25th 15:45) after finishing sixth at the Footlocker South Regional in 15:13.
