College Station, Texas - Texas-Pan American had seven top ten finishes and two additions to the top10 list at the shortened Texas A&M Invitational. Due to increased lightning strikes, the Invitational was cancelled after the second heat of the Men's 800. UTPA heads to Waco, April 17-18 to compete in the Southwestern Bell Classic.
Amy Moses (Sr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) and Isaac Ybarra (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) were the top finishers as they were 2nd in the Women's and Men's Hammer, respectively. Rowena Hamlet (So./Mississaugua, Ontario, Canada/Lorne Park Secondary School) ran the 100M Hurdles for the first time in her career. Her time of 15.32 is the second fastest in UTPA history. Placing among the top 10 at the meet were Clarisse Arredondo (Sr./McAllen, Texas/Centenary) (10th - Javelin - 117-4), Rashaad Ben (Sr./Austin, Texas/Sidney Lanier HS) (4th - 110M Hurdles - 14.29) Amber Kelly (Fr./Houston, Texas/J.F. Dobie HS) (6th - Hammer - 127-3), Marlin Manley (Jr./Hampton, Va./Bethel HS) (T10th - High Jump - 6-6.75) and David Trevino (Fr./Brownsville, Texas/Hanna HS) (5th - 1500 - 4:01.16).
"Overall, we had a solid meet," said Head Coach Ricky Vaughn.
"Isaac has just been throwing solid every meet. Rashaad had
a pretty good race considering he hit the third hurdle pretty hard. Rowena
had a good debut in the 100M Hurdles. Jessica Ehimika (So./Harlingen,
Texas/South Texas High School for Health Professionals) ran a very solid 400M
Dash. Clarisse threw well in the Javelin. It was disappointing, that
because of the weather, a few of our kids that were on the regional bubble didn't
get to compete."
