Austin, Texas - Texas-Pan American took a small contingent of athletes to the Texas Relays, April 1-2. UTPA is back in action April 10 when they travel to College Station to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational.
Isaac Ybarra (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) and Amy Moses (Sr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) both finished 11th out of 21 throwers in the men's and women's Hammer, respectively. Moses had a toss of 179-4 while Ybarra had his second longest throw at 196-2. Rashaad Ben (Sr./Austin, Texas/Sidney Lanier HS) ran 14.35 to finish second in his heat and 18th overall in the 110M Hurdles. Hugo Cervantes (Sr./Weslaco, Texas/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) ran 9:52.75 to finish 18th in the 3000M Steeplechase.
"Lack of experience in big meets hurt us the last two days," said
Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. "This was our first big meet against big
schools and our performances showed that. Rashaad ran a solid race. If
not for hitting the first two hurdles badly, I think he would have qualified
for the final. This was a really tough field in the men's Hammer. Last year,
Isaac's throw would have put him in the final. I would have liked to
have had better performances."
