Laredo, Texas - Texas-Pan American had a solid meet at the Border Olympics today. One school record fell and there were six additions to the top ten list. The meet was not scored.
MEN
Isaac Ybarra (Sr./Edinburg, Texas/Sharyland HS) opened the outdoor season in style winning the Discus with a toss of 161-3. That broke the school record of 158-5 set by Gonzalo Gonzales in 1998. Ybarra was also fourth in the shot put with the second longest throw in UTPA history at 50-9.50. Matt Clinton (Jr.Raymondville, Texas/Raymondville HS) cracked the top 10 as he was 4th in the Javelin at 143-1. Marlin Manley (Jr./Hampton, Vir./Bethel HS) cleared 6-8 to win the High Jump. "We had a pretty good meet." Said head coach Ricky Vaughn. "Isaac hit two PR's and broke a school record. Aaron (Castro) (So./Mc Allen, Texas/McAllen Memorial HS) really stood out. After being injured for two weeks, for him to come out and run 1:58.99 in the 800 is tough. Marlin had a really good jump."

WOMEN
Three additions to the top 10 list and an individual champion highlighted the day for the Lady Broncs. Debbie Escobar (Sr./Roma, Texas/Roma HS) won the Pole Vault with a vault of 7-6. The throws were strong events for UTPA as three of the five throwers cracked the top 10. Amber Kelly (Fr./Houston, Texas/J.F. Dobie HS) was 2nd in the Shot Put with a toss of 42-3. That was the 5th longest throw in school history. Also having the fifth longest throw was Stephanie Perez (Fr./Brownsville, Texas/Pace HS) with a toss of 134-2 in the Discus for 3rd. Clarisse Arredondo (Jr./McAllen, Texas/McAllen HS) made her collegiate debut throwing the Javelin 113-0. That put her 2nd and was the 6th longest throw in UTPA history. "Overall, we had a very good outing" Said head coach Ricky Vaughn. "Lorraine Garcia (Fr./Laredo, Texas/Nixon HS) had an outstanding meet. This is the start of better things for her. Karla Hernandez (Fr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS) had a good meet. I thought our throwers threw pretty well."
