FOUR UTPA RECORDS FALL AT HOUSTON INDOOR CLASSIC

HOUSTON, TX- The University of Texas-Pan American track and field team broke four school records at their second indoor meet of the 2003 season Saturday.

The Broncs finished sixth of 11 teams, while the Lady Broncs tied for seventh in a 12-team field at the Houston Indoor Classic at the Yeoman Field House.

The men had 40 points. Houston won the meet with 101 1/2 points. The women finished with 22 points, tying them with Tulane. Texas was first with 107 points.

Junior Amy Moses (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) broke the school record with a toss of 59 feet, 3 ½ inches in the 20 pound weight throw. Moses finished first in the weight throw, and her mark was just short of the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Moses also finished fifth in the shot put, with a toss of 41 feet, eight inches, which is a personal best.

Sophomore Deneb DeLuna (Mission, TX/Sharyland HS) also threw well. DeLuna was third in the weight throw at 48 feet, and her mark of 42 feet, six inches that was good for fourth place in the shot put was a personal record.

Sophomore Jeff Martzall (Fort Wayne, IN/Northrop HS) also established a school record. His pole vault of 16 feet, ¾ inch was the best in UTPA history, and allowed him to finish third.

Sophomore Westly Keating (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS/Texas) broke the school record at 3000 meters. He won the race with a time of 8:32.79. Junior Hugo Cervantes (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco HS/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) finished fourth at 3000 meters in 8:49.13, which was a personal best.

The fourth school record of the day went to junior Isaac Ybarra (Edinburg, TX/Sharyland HS). He finished first in the 35 pound weight throw with a school record toss of 56 feet, 10 inches.

Other standouts included freshman Margeaux McCarthy (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS), who finished eighth at 800 meters in 2:20.21, and also ran a 59 second split in her relay, which were both personal records. Sophomore Patty Villarreal (San Juan, TX/PSJA HS) was 10th at 5000 meters in 19:38.50, which was a personal best, and sophomore Kathryn Waslen (Calgary, AB/West Island College), making her debut, was seventh in 19:00.20. Sophomore Matt Clinton (Raymondville, TX/Raymondville HS) had a personal record in the hurdles, 8.56 seconds, and was eighth in the B section of the long jump with a personal best of 19 feet, 8 ¾ inches. Junior J.C. Crosby (Pharr, TX/PSJA HS) was sixth in the 35 pound weight throw, with a toss of 42 feet, five inches, and eighth in the shot out with a toss of 47-4 ½.

"We really had a great meet," said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. "Just about everyone on our team had a personal record, and we broke four school records. I was very pleased with our performance."
