SCHOOL RECORDS FALL AT HOUSTON INDOOR INVITATIONAL
HOUSTON, TX-It was another record-breaking outing for The University
of Texas-Pan American track and field team.
Three more school records fell, and Texas-Pan American student-athletes
posted 20 personal bests at the Houston Indoor Invitational at the Yeoman
Field House. No team scores were recorded at the meet.
Sophomore Westly Keating (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS/Texas) broke his own
school record at 3000 meters.
Keating, who set a UTPA record last week, bettered it this week, finishing
second at 3000 meters in 8:25.62.
Junior Isaac Ybarra (Edinburg, TX/Sharyland HS) broke a pair of school
records. Ybarra broke his own UTPA record in the 35 pound weight throw
with a throw of 57 feet, 10 ½ inches, bettering the mark he set
last week. Ybarra also broke the school record in the shot put with
a toss of 51 feet, ¾ inch.
Senior Robert Lopez (Mission, TX/Mission HS/Texas-El Paso) has a personal
record for the third week in a row, with a mark of 51 feet, 8 1.2 inches
in the 35 pound weight throw. Sophomore Deneb DeLuna (Mission, TX/Sharyland
HS) had a personal record in the weight throw (50 feet, 1 ¼ inches)
as she finished second, behind teammate Amy Moses (Junior, Edinburg,
TX/Edinburg North HS), who won the event with a toss of 56 feet, 7 ½
inches. Sophomore Matt Clinton (Raymondville, TX/Raymondville HS) had
a personal record in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in 8.42 seconds,
which is just eight-tenths of a second of a second off the school record.
"We had a really good meet," said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn.
"We had 20 personal records, broke three school records, and had
a lot of good performances. It was good to finish up with such a successful
meet. Things are moving in the right direction, and now, we'll look
to get ready for the outdoor season."
UTPA will return to action when they begin their outdoor track and field
season at the Texas-San Antonio Whataburger Invitational March 14th
and 15th.
