MOSES BREAKS RECORD, QUALIFIES FOR NCAAS
SOUTH BEND, IN-The University of Texas-Pan American's track and field team
will be represented at this year's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Junior Amy Moses (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) broke the school record
for the 20 pound weight throw and earned automatic qualification for the NCAAs
when she finished first with a school record throw of 65 feet, five inches
at the Alex Wilson Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center at Notre Dame
Friday evening.
Moses' throw broke her own school record, which she had set at the University
of Houston/ RunSport All Comers Meet February 15th , when she threw the weight
60 feet, one inch and finished first.
Sophomore Westly Keating (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS/Texas) also set a school
record. He finished ninth in his first attempt at 3000 meters in a school
record time of 14:26.05, but did not qualify for the NCAAs.
"Amy won the meet, and qualified automatically," said
UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. "She set the record by five feet. Westly
shattered the school record by over 20 seconds, and even though he didn't
qualify, it was a good effort."
Moses will compete at the NCAAs next weekend at the University of Arkansas.
The rest of the Broncs and Lady Broncs will begin their outdoor season Saturday
at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
