UTPA POSTS 12 PERSONAL RECORDS AT UTSA/WHATABURGER RELAYS
SAN ANTONIO, TX- The University of Texas-Pan American's track and field team
posted 12 personal bests in their second outdoor meet of the season at the
UTSA/Whataburger Relays at Gustafson Stadium Saturday. No team scores were
recorded at the meet.
Sophomore Westly Keating (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS/Texas) won at both 1500
meters and 3000 meters. He won the 1500 in a personal best time of 3:54.81,
and he won the 3000 in 8:21.12.
Junior Rashaad Ben (Austin, TX/Lanier HS) was third overall in the hurdles
in 14.52 seconds, and sophomore Marlin Manley (Hampton, VA/Bethel HS) was
second in the high jump at 6-8, which tied his personal best mark.
Freshman Amy Torvik (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS) finished second at 400
meters in a personal best time of 57.24 seconds, while sophomore Rowena Hamlet
(Mississauga, ON/Lorne Park SS) also posted a personal best in the 400 at
57.61 seconds. Freshman Jessica Ehimika (Harlingen, TX/South Texas HS for
Health Professions) won her division at 400 meters in 1:01.85.
Five Lady Broncs posted personal bests in the 1500 meter run. Freshman Margeaux
McCarthy (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS) was sixth in 4:49.42, freshman Deanah Chavez
(Edinburg, TX/Edinburg HS) was 12th in 4:57.96, junior Patty Villarreal (San
Juan, TX/PSJA HS) 15th in 5:05.83, sophomore Claudia Rosas (Mission, TX/Mission
HS) 21st in 5:14.45, and freshman Dannely Flores (Brownsville, TX/Hanna HS)
was 23rd in 5:18.94. Villarreal and Rosas also had personal records at 3000
meters, Villarreal by finishing 10th in 10:55.54, and Rosas by finishing 11th
in 11:03.52. In the pole vault, Senior Rachel Drury (Moscow, ID/Moscow HS)
was fifth at 10 feet, while junior Debbie Escobar (Roma, TX/Roma HS) was 11th
with a personal record of seven feet.
"We had a good day Saturday," said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn.
"We had 12 personal records at the meet. We'll come home and try to build
on what we did today, and have a better meet at home next weekend."
UTPA will host the Angela Procter Open next Saturday.
