KEATING
TO STANFORD INVITATIONAL
EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American’s track and field
team hosts the Angela Procter Open this Saturday, one of the Broncs’ top performers
will be running at a prestigious meet on the West Coast.
Sophomore
Westly Keating (Pharr,
TX/PSJA North HS/Texas) will run 10,000 meters Saturday
evening at the Stanford Invitational. The 10,000 meters is one of two events
that are exempt from the new regional qualifying system, and Keating will attempt
to achieve a time that will allow him to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track
and Field Championships in June.
“The
last few years, all but one or two NCAA qualifiers in the 10,000 have come from
this meet,” said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. “They always have a good field,
and between the atmosphere that is created there, and the quality of the field,
the race usually produces phenomenal times. Stanford is one of the premier distance
running schools in the country, and a lot of post-collegiate athletes train
there, which is one of the reasons that this should be a good meet. I expect
Westly to have a really good race.”
