UTPA TRACK AND FIELD TO COMPETE AT TEXAS RELAYS
EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's track and field team will
compete at the prestigious Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this weekend. The
action takes place at Mike Myers Track and Field and Soccer Stadium on the UT
campus.
A select group of student-athletes will be representing Texas-Pan American.
Junior Patty Villarreal (San Juan, TX/PSJA HS) will run the 10,000 meters, sophomore
Jeff Martzall (Fort Wayne, IN/Northrop HS) will compete in the pole vault, sophomore
Rowena Hamlet (Mississauga, ON/Lorne Park SS) will participate in the 400 meter
hurdles, sophomore Westly Keating (Pharr, TX/PSJA North/Texas) will run 5,000
meters, sophomore Deneb DeLuna (Mission, TX/Sharyland HS) will compete in the
shot put, sophomore Marlin Manley (Hampton, VA/Bethel HS) will compete in the
high jump, and the Broncs and Lady Broncs will each run the distance medley
relay.
"You have to have a good time or mark to compete," said UTPA Head
Coach Ricky Vaughn. "All the people we're taking are people we believe
can finish in the top eight in their event. I think Westly has a chance to win
his event, it will be interesting to see how he comes back from running the
10K last week. The atmosphere at the Texas Relays is conducive to producing
good marks, and we're also looking to qualify some more people for regionals."
The track and field team will return to action when they visit Stephen F. Austin
next Saturday, April 12th.
