KEATING WINS 5000 AT DRAKE RELAYS

DES MOINES, IA-The University of Texas-Pan American's Westly Keating has added a big victory to his resume.

Keating won the 5000 meter run at the prestigious Drake Relays at Drake Stadium Thursday afternoon. He won in 14:12.47, leading the race from the start and pulling away from the field.

"Westly ran a great race, nobody could touch him," said UTPA Assistant Coach Marisa Robinson. "He won by 40 or 50 meters. As soon as the gun went off, he took the lead, and he had it the whole time. It was cold, and the conditions are not what he is used to, but he did an excellent job. He ran with a lot of heart, I'm proud of him."

Texas-Pan American will be represented Friday and Saturday at the Drake Relays. Friday, sophomore Rowena Hamlet (Mississauga, ON/Lorne Park SS) will compete in the 400 meter hurdles, and sophomore Deneb DeLuna (Mission, TX/Sharyland HS) will participate in the shot put. Junior Hugo Cervantes (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco HS/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) will be in the 3000 meter steeplechase Saturday afternoon.
