KEATING ONLY QUALIFIER, BRONCS 25TH AT NCAA MIDWEST REGIONALS

LINCOLN, NE-Sophomore Westly Keating (Pharr, TX/PSJA North HS/Texas) wound up as the only qualifier for The University of Texas-Pan American's track and field team at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships at the University of Nebraska's Ed Weir Track Stadium this weekend.

Sophomore Jeff Martzall (Fort Wayne, IN/Northrop HS) did not record a height in the pole vault competition Saturday. The other Texas-Pan American entrants did not qualify for nationals in their events Friday. Keating's finish allowed the Broncs to finish 25th at the 32-team meet with eight points.

"I would have liked to have seen Jeff do better, but just like yesterday's results, this was a good experience for us," said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. "It's really a matter of getting more experience in big meets. I'm optimistic that Westly will do well at nationals. I was pleased that we finished 25th overall. To finish where we did, with the number of high quality teams that competed, is a good reflection on our team, and is something we can build on for the future."

Keating is qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at both 5000 and 10,000 meters. The NCAAs will be held at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, CA June 11th-14th.
