TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE ENDS LADY BRONCS' WINNING STREAK

KINGSVILLE, TX-Texas A&M-Kingsville overcame a 2-0 deficit and won the final three games of the match, defeating The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team, 28-30, 21-30, 30-22, 30-19 and 15-13, at the Steinke Center Tuesday evening.

The loss ended the Lady Broncs' seven-match winning streak. Texas-Pan American, which had 48 kills and hit .248 for the first three games, was held to a hitting percentage of .035 for the final two games.

Freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) had 21 digs to lead UTPA's defensive effort. It was the seventh consecutive match in which she has recorded 20 or more digs, and it left her 44 digs short of the single-season UTPA record of 380. Junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS/ Iowa) had 22 kills and hit .474, while senior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) added 16 kills and 10 digs.

Trina Ervin led TAMUK with 20 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Shelly McGlothlin added 19 kills, Melanie Biggerstaff had 18 and Jamie Alvarado had 15.

"We played well in the first two games, but then they started playing better, they got the momentum, and we couldn't do anything to stop them," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "Texas A&M-Kingsville played good defense, we made too many mistakes, and, on the whole, we passed poorly. They got out in front of us in the fifth game and we made a furious rally, but we just fell short. We'll have to come home and regroup and get ready for New Mexico State."

The Lady Broncs fell to 10-8 with the defeat, while TAMUK improved to 4-13. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they host New Mexico State Thursday evening.
