EDINBURG, TX-Two of the tougher opponents for The University of Texas-Pan
American's volleyball team will be featured on Parents' Weekend this
weekend at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Lady Broncs, who had their seven-match winning streak ended Tuesday
evening at Texas A&M-Kingsville, will try to start another winning
streak against New Mexico State Thursday evening, while arch-rival
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi visits Saturday evening. Both matches
are set for 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
NMSU has won five matches in a row, and brings an 11-4 record into
Thursday night's match. The Aggies are ranked 21st in the NCAA with
a hitting percentage of .281, and are coached by Mike Jordan, who
is not related to the famous basketball player with a similar name.
"New Mexico State is a senior-heavy team that is doing quite
well in the Sun Belt Conference," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn.
"They'll be very solid. We have to take care of business on our
side of the net, and avoid making mistakes."
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 7-12, but the Islanders defeated the
Lady Broncs for the first time ever last November 8th in five games
at the UTPA Fieldhouse. "The Corpus Christi game is one of those
rivalry games," said Thorn. "Every time we play them, it's
a battle, and I expect the same thing Saturday night."
Saturday is Parents' Night, and parents of the Texas-Pan American
players will be introduced prior to the match. "We've invited
all the parents to come in for the match," said Thorn. "We'll
introduce them before the match, and thank them for all their efforts."
The Lady Broncs will continue their home stand when they host Texas
A&M-International next Tuesday.
