LADY BRONCS DEFEAT TEXAS SOUTHERN IN THREE EDINBURG, TX-A match against traditional rival Texas Southern was just what the doctor ordered for The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team Wednesday evening. The Lady Broncs broke a three-match losing streak by defeating the Tigers in three games, 30-10, 30-9 and 30-20 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Texas-Pan American took control early, out hitting TSU, .393 to minus .158 in the first game, and hitting a torrid .500 for the first two games. Texas Southern held UTPA to a hitting percentage of .216 in the third game, but the Tigers hit negative .081 themselves. Junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, Texas/Iowa/Los Fresnos HS) led Texas-Pan American with 10 kills, six digs, and a .400 hitting percentage. Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/ Seguin HS) and freshman outside hitter Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango HS) each added eight kills, freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) had 17 digs, freshman setter Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial HS) had 23 assists, and sophomore setter Sandy Darway (San Luis Obispo, CA/Arroyo Grande HS) added 19. It was the 23rd consecutive match in which Marcengo has been in double figures in digs. "We had a tough week last week, and we caught Texas Southern when they didn't have their best night," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We wanted to do a good job of ball control, and we emphasized playing well on our side of the net, and I think we did that. Cathi had a great match, our middle blockers played well, and Carol had 17 digs in a quick, three-game match. Now we have to come back and get ready for a tough match on the road Saturday against Corpus Christi, one of our traditional rivals." The Lady Broncs improved to 13-12 with the victory, while TSU dropped to 5-13. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday morning. VB-29-04102203 |
