Release: Friday, October 4, 2002 LADY BRONCS USE NEAR-RECORD PERFORMANCE TO DOWN CENTENARY EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team took advantage of their only match this week to get back on the winning track. And they used a near-record performance to do it. The Lady Broncs hit a torrid .469 in defeating fellow independent Centenary, 30-22, 30-15 and 30-14 at the UTPA Fieldhouse Friday evening. The percentage was Texas-Pan American's second best single-game percentage ever, behind the .478 they hit against Texas Southern two years ago. It marked the second time this season that UT Pan American has hit .400 or better in a match. UTPA hit .500 as a team in the first game, .484 in the second game and .429 in the third. Junior outside hitter Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) led the way with 18 kills, 11 digs and a .680 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had 12 kills and hit .385, freshman middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) hit .500 with 10 kills, freshman middle blocker Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial HS) had nine kills and hit .643, and freshman setter Katie Burke (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) added 49 assists. "We came out and did what we needed to do," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We were aggressive for the whole match. Centenary is a team that will fight and scratch and claw their way back, and when a rally-scored game is close at the end, anything can happen. We needed to put them away, and that's what we did. We played better as the match went on, and we remained aggressive and stayed focused, which is what we have to do." Tracee Byrd led CC with 10 kills, while Catey Batte added eight. The Lady Broncs improved to 5-12 with the victory, while Centenary dropped to 8-15 with the defeat. UTPA will return to action when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday night March 8th.
