LADY BRONCS DOWN TEXAS A&M-INTERNATIONAL

EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team got the jump on one of their newest in-state rivals Friday night.

The Lady Broncs defeated first-year NAIA power Texas A&M-International, 30-18, 30-12 and 30-28, at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Junior outside hitter Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) had 17 kills, 14 digs and hit .519 to lead the Lady Broncs both offensively and defensively. Freshman middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/ Seguin HS) had 11 kills, five blocks and hit .368, freshman middle blocker Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA (Bishop Amat Memorial HS) had 10 kills and hit .304, and freshman setter Katie Burke (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) had 43 assists. Loni Wildenborg led the DustDevils with nine kills, Lea Valdez added eight, and Diana Lopez had 24 assists.

"Texas A&M-International is a very good defensive team, and we had to come out and play hard in order to beat them," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We did a good job getting their serves back into play, and we also did well transitioning from our defense to our offense. We're communicating well and working well together, even in scramble situations. We also blocked well. We had nine blocks, and this was one of our better matches in that area."

With the victory, the Lady Broncs won their third match in a row for the first time this season, improving to 7-12. TAMIU fell to 21-2. Texas-Pan American will host Prairie View A&M Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
