Release: Saturday, November 2, 2002 LADY BRONCS WIN NINTH STRAIGHT, BEAT TAMIU LAREDO, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team has tied their longest winning streak ever. The Lady Broncs won their ninth consecutive match by defeating Texas A&M-International, 30-24, 30-18 and 30-28, at the DustDevils' campus gym Saturday. Junior outside hitter Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) led the Lady Broncs both offensively and defensively. Cruz had 17 kills and 14 digs while hitting .333. Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had 14 kills, nine digs and hit .355, sophomore outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, CA/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) added 12 digs, and freshman setter Katie Burke (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) added 37 assists and 13 digs. Freshman middle blockers Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) and Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial HS) had five blocks each as the Lady Broncs out blocked TAMIU, 15-13 and hit .220 to the DustDevils' .009. Lea Valdez led TAMIU with seven kills and nine blocks. "Texas A&M-International has had a chance to work with their new lineup for a while, and they played great defense," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We played aggressively, and we had to match their intensity to win the match. It was a good way to continue our streak, and to get us ready for our match next weekend." With the victory, the Lady Broncs improved to 13-12, while TAMIU fell to 23-6. Texas-Pan American will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday evening. VB-32-03 110202 |
