LADY BRONCS REAP INDEPENDENT HONORS

EDINBURG, TX-Five members of The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team have earned NCAA Division I All-Independent honors. The selections were made by a vote of coaches at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Southern Independent Championships, held last weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Junior outside hitter Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) and sophomore outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, CA/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) were each honored twice.

Cruz was named first team All-Independent, and was also named Most Valuable Offensive Player. Netemeyer was named second team All-Independent, as well as Newcomer of the Year.

Three other Lady Broncs were honored. Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) was named first team All-Independent, while freshman middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) and freshman setter Katie Burke (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) were named to the Freshman All-Independent Team.

Cruz leads the Lady Broncs with a .264 hitting percentage, and averages 3.33 kills and 2.82 digs per game. Netemeyer averages 2.53 kills and 2.84 digs per game. Muszynski leads Texas-Pan American in both kills (3.72) and digs (2.93) per game, while Redd averages 2.26 kills and 0.69 blocks per game. Burke has broken the single-season record for assists with 1218, and averages 11.17 assists per game.

"It's a great way to recognize some of the individuals on our team," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "It is a positive reflection on how well the entire team has played this season, and reflects as much on how well our team has done as well as on any individual. We were well-represented, since there were several strong teams among the Independent teams. To have two first teamers, the offensive MVP, the Newcomer of the Year, and two of the seven players on the All-Freshman Team shows that the future for our program is very strong. We have some strong players coming back next year, and it shows we are definitely moving in the right direction."
