EDINBURG, TEXAS - The University of Texas-Pan American's women's basketball team remained undefeated with an 84-55 win over Texas A&M-International at the UTPA Fieldhouse Tuesday night. With the victory, the Lady Broncs improved to 3-0 on the season for the best start in school history.
The game was close for the first 13 minutes. Priscilla San Miguel of the Dustdevils hit three free throws with 6:52 left in the first half to cut Texas-Pan American's lead to 23-20. The Lady Broncs replied by going on a 14-6 run to lead by 11 points at halftime, 37-26.
In the second half, after a three-pointer by San Miguel closed the gap to eight, 37-29, with 18:11 to go, UTPA scored 11 straight points during the next three minutes to put the game away.
Molly Schamel (Jr./Hector, N.Y./Watkins Glen HS/Yavapai College) led the Lady Broncs with 16 points and two steals, making eight of 14 shots from the field. Kim Lewis (Jr./Roland, Okla./ Roland HS/Eastern Oklahoma State) had 11 points with three three-point field goals, while Ashley Roberts (Jr./Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS/Butler County CC) had 11 points and six steals.
Vanessa Villareal led Texas A&M-International (0-5) with 13 points and three steals, while San Miguel scored 11 points.
"I felt like we got started a little late, but we picked up the pace late
in the first half and stretched it out in the second half," said UTPA Head
Coach DeAnn Craft. "We had some of our people come out and step it up in
the second half, and I liked the way we responded. I thought we continued to
play with enthusiasm, and we I thought it was important that everyone got a
chance to play. (Freshman) MaHogany (Daniel, Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll
HS) played well, and you can't say enough about what Ashley (Roberts) does for
us. We could have had a few less turnovers, but when you play so many people
and use so many different combinations, you have to expect that to happen."
Texas-Pan American will return to action when they host St. Edward's Saturday
evening at 5:00 p.m. That game will be the first game of a doubleheader, preceding
the Broncs' game against Texas-Arlington.
