Prairie View, Texas -Texas Pan American used a strong second half run
to beat Prairie View A&M, 70-63 tonight. The win moved the Lady
Broncs to 10-13 for the season. It is the fifth time UTPA has won at
least 10 games and the first since time since the 2000-01 season.
For the first 10 and a half minutes, the contest was back and forth.
With 9:25 remaining, the Lady Panthers held a 14-12 lead. UTPA then
rolled off eight straight points off two jumpers and a free throw by
Kristi Dudley (Fr./Cedar Hill, Texas/Cedar Hill HS) and a jumper
and a free throw from Dawnne Cheadle (Jr./Roswell, N.M./Seminole
State College). The gave the Lady Broncs the lead, 20-14 with 7:49 left.
They ended the half with a 33-27 lead.
Texas-Pan American came out firing in the second half with a 9-2 run
in the first three minutes to lead 44-29 with 17:00 to go in the game.
PVAM refused to quit and out scored the Lady Broncs 28-12 over the next
12 minutes. A three-pointer by Karlanda Butler gave Prairie View
a 57-56 lead with 5:39 to go. 18 seconds later a jumper from Stacey
Gooden (So./Houston, Texas/J.F. Dobie HS) gave UTPA the lead and
they never relinquished it. The Lady Broncs finished the game on a 14-6
run to seal the game.
For UTPA, Amanda Carlow (Sr./Pine Ridge, S.D./Northeast JC)
had 20 points and two steals, Dudley had 14 points and eight
rebounds, Cheadle had 12 points and Arrita Oler (Jr./Rialto,
Calif./Coffeyville CC).
For PVAM (4-14) Natasha Adams had 18 points and eight rebounds,
Angel Smith had 16 points and Carolyn Hopkins had 13 points,
nine rebounds and blocked four shots.
"We are thrilled with our performance tonight," said Head
Coach DeAnn Craft. "Prairie View had an outstanding second
half offensive performance tonight. The entire game was one of runs
and we got the last run when it counted most. We had a well distributed
offensive attack with four kids in double-figures. We played very aggressive
tonight and did a good job at getting the ball inside and taking advantage
of the mismatches inside. We did a great job at drawing fouls particularly
among their front court players. We are defiantly looking forward to
coming back home to take on Louisiana-Lafayette next Monday."
Texas-Pan American is back in action, Monday, February 16 taking on
Louisiana-Lafayette at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The game is scheduled to
start at 5:00 p.m.
