LADY BRONCS FALL TO ANGELO STATE, 67-38
EDINBURG, TX-Kelli Anne Goble scored 18 points and Kami Williams added
11 as Angelo State defeated The University of Texas-Pan American's women's
basketball team, 79-43, at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Rambelles broke on top early, scoring the game's first six points
and racing to a 26-4 lead nearly halfway through the opening half.
Senior forward Naima Williams (Houston, TX/Clear Brook HS) broke ASU's
early run with a basket 3:51 into the game, then sophomore forward Jennifer
Arriola (Rio Rico, AZ/Rio Rico HS) connected a few minutes later. But
the Rambelles scored 12 unanswered points to take a sizable early lead.
Williams hit a jumper and a pair of layups at the end of the first
half as Texas-Pan American cut ASU's lead to 19, 41-22, just before
the end of the first half. However, Angelo State came back and built
their lead back up to 35 points later in the half and cruised to the
win.
Williams led the Lady Broncs with 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Arriola added seven points and six boards. UT Pan American converted
on just 32.7 per cent of their shots, and was outrebounded, 42-37.
"Angelo State did a great job of moving the ball at the right
time, hitting the open player, and making their shots," said UTPA
Interim Head Coach Tracy Anderson. "They got an early lead on us,
and we just couldn't recover. They have very good shooters, and we wanted
to go inside and exploit our height advantage, but we didn't do a good
job of finishing. Angelo State does a great job of playing within themselves,
and not trying to do anything they can't do. We didn't do a good job
of executing defensively."
The Lady Broncs dropped to 0-2 with the loss, while ASU improved to
3-0. UTPA will host Tulsa Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.
"Tulsa is huge, they go 6-4 and 6-3 up front, and they score a
lot of points," said Anderson. "It won't be any easier. We
have to try to concentrate on getting out of the gate better. We haven't
been able to do that in our first two games, and it hurt us."
