NEW BRAUNFELS, TX-After the first round, The University of Texas-Pan American's women's golf team is challenging for the lead at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational at The Bandit golf course.

The Lady Broncs shot a first round score of 325, leaving them seven strokes behind first-place Sam Houston State and two shots behind second place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the nine-team, 36-hole tournament. Texas-Pan American is tied for third place with Lamar. UTPA is followed by Western New Mexico at 333, McNeese State at 334, McLennan Community College at 340, Texas State-San Marcos at 342 and the host Bobcats' #2 team at 344.

Sophomore Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville, HS) shot a 76, and is tied for second place, two strokes behind first place. Sophomore Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/ Colegio Portal) shot a 79 and is tied for eighth. Sophomore Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis HS) and junior Christine Treanor (Bulverde, TX/Smithson HS) each shot 85 and are tied for 22nd, and senior Itziar Unanue (Apodaca, Mexico/Colegio San Patricio) shot an 86 and is tied for 28th.

"I was a little disappointed with our score," said UTPA Head Coach Barb Odale. "I know we're not that far out, and I know we'll be ready to go tomorrow and try to overtake Sam Houston. Stefanie had a good round, and is only two shots out of the lead, and Daniela is also looking to jump up individually."

The tournament concludes Sunday.
