LADY BRONCS 2ND AFTER FIRST DAY AT BRONC INTERCOLLEGIATE CLASSIC

EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's women's golf team is in second place, and a Lady Bronc golfer is in first place after the first day of action at the two-day Bronc Intercollegiate Classic at the Los Lagos Golf Club.

UTPA freshman Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville HS) fired a first-round 72, which, combined with her second round score of 79, left her with a 36-hole score of 149, and a one-stroke lead over Tessie Simar of McNeese State and Jillian Wyne of St. Mary's.

The Lady Broncs shot a second round score of 315 Monday. Their first-round score was 322, and that left them with a two-round score of 637, seven strokes behind the leader, Lamar. Southwest Texas State is in third place at 640, followed by St. Mary's at 647 and McNeese State at 649.

Freshman Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/Colegio Portal) was next after Maynard for Texas-Pan American, shooting scores of 74 and 82 for a total of 156 and fourth place, one stroke ahead of Southwest Texas' Liz McCoppin. Freshman Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis HS) shot scores of 86 and 77 for 163, leaving her in 14th place. Junior Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham HS) shot 90 and 79 for 169 and 20th place, while junior Itziar Unanue (Monterrey, Mexico/ Colegio San Patricio) shot 90 and 83 for 173 and 24th place.

Three Lady Broncs played as individuals. Sophomore Christine Treanor (Bulverde, TX/ Smithson Valley HS) shot 84 and 86 for 170, tying her for 21st, senior Christina Infante (Lyford, TX/Lyford HS) shot 92 and 100 for 192 and is 27th, while freshman Sarah Castillo (Fort Worth, TX/R.L. Paschal HS) shot 106 and 94 for 200 and 28th place.

"I was very proud of the way we played the second 18," said UTPA Head Coach Barb Odale. "The wind picked up, the conditions were tough, and we stayed focused. I'm proud of Nikki, who shot one under par for the back nine, and had a nine shot improvement between her first and second rounds, and I'm ecstatic that Stefanie is leading the tournament. I'm not sure she'll sleep tonight, because she's never been in this position before. The key for us tomorrow will be to avoid the big numbers, and keep our scores at bogey at worst. Seven strokes isn't that much to make up as a team."

The final round will be played Tuesday morning, with the first group teeing off at 8:00 a.m. and the final group set to go off at 9:14 a.m.
