Release: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 LADY BRONCS THIRD, MAYNARD FIRST AT BRONC INTERCOLLEGIATE CLASSI EDINBURG, TX-It took four tournaments for freshman Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville HS) to make her presence felt as a member of The University of Texas-Pan American's women's golf team. Maynard made her fourth tournament her best so far, shooting a final-round total of 80 and a 54-hole total of 229 and winning in a scorecard playoff to emerge as the medalist at the Bronc Intercollegiate Classic at the Los Lagos Golf Club. Maynard and Jillian Wyne of St. Mary's each shot scores of 229. The scorecard playoff involved comparing scores on the ninth hole, which was the hole rated as the hardest on the course. Maynard shot a six, while Wyne shot a nine. "It's unbelievable, and I'm ecstatic," said Maynard. "I knew that I had to take it one shot at a time today, I hit a few bad shots, but I recovered well, and my short game was pretty good. I didn't know what I needed to shoot on the last hole in order to finish first. My coach offered to tell me, but I didn't want to know." The Lady Broncs shot a final round score of 334 Tuesday. That gave them a three-round total of 971 for a third-place finish in the five-team field. Lamar shot a 321 and finished first at 951, while Southwest Texas State shot 324 and was second at 964. McNeese State shot 325 and St. Mary's shot 327, and they tied for fourth place at 974. Freshman Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/Colegio Portal) was next after Maynard for Texas-Pan American, shooting 80 on the final day for a total of 236 and a tie for fifth. Freshman Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis HS) shot 87 for 250, leaving her tied for 18th place. Junior Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham HS) shot 87 for 256 and a tie for 21st place, while junior Itziar Unanue (Monterrey, Mexico/ Colegio San Patricio) shot 92 for 265 and a tie for 24th place. Three Lady Broncs played as individuals. Sophomore Christine Treanor (Bulverde, TX/Smithson Valley HS) shot 86 for 256, tying her for 21st, senior Christina Infante (Lyford, TX/Lyford HS) shot 89 for 281 and was 27th, while freshman Sarah Castillo (Fort Worth, TX/R.L. Paschal HS) shot 106 for 306 and 28th place. "I was kind of disappointed the way we played the last round, but I'm very proud of Stefanie," said UTPA Head Coach Barb Odale. "The conditions were tough, and I thought they would play to our advantage, but we didn't take advantage of them." The Lady Broncs will return to action at Sam Houston State
