Release: Friday, March 14, 2003 LADY BRONCS NEAR SCHOOL RECORD, FINISH SIXTH TAMPA, FL-The University of Texas-Pan American's women's golf team turned in a sizzling round Friday, on the last day of the 21-team Snowbird Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Northern Illinois at the Pebblecreek Golf and Country Club. The Lady Broncs shot a second-round score of 308, two strokes off the school record of 306. That gave them a 36-hole total of 636, good for a sixth place finish. James Madison won the tournament with a score of 591. Southern Mississippi was next at 609, Notre Dame and Toledo followed at 612, and Southern Illinois was next at 620. Junior Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham HS) and freshman Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/Colegio Portal) led Texas-Pan American. Each shot scores of 74 Tuesday, with Frazier's round equaling her best as a collegian. Cortes finished 11th with a total of 153, and Frazier was 15th at 155. Freshman Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville HS) shot an 80 for a two-day total of 162, freshman Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis HS) shot 80 for a total of 166, and junior Itziar Unanue (Apodaca, Mexico/Colegio San Patricio) shot 80 for a total of 167. "I was very pleased, and I was really happy for Crystal and Daniela," said UTPA Head Coach Barb Odale. "Both of them were nervous coming in. We were disappointed that we missed the school record by two strokes, and we know we can play even better. It gives us something that we can build on for the next tournament."
