LADY BRONCS DOWN CENTENARY, 4-3

EDINBURG, TX—A couple of weeks ago, The University of Texas-Pan American’s women’s tennis team set a goal of winning their final four matches of the season.

The Lady Broncs are halfway to their goal after defeating Centenary, 4-3, at the Cox Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.

Senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) and sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) defeated Anja Schmidt and Heather Kelly, 9-8, and  sophomore Kathryn Waslen (Calgary, AB/West Island College) and freshman Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) defeated Elizabeth Pitts and Brandy Smith, 8-2, as the Lady Broncs earned a crucial doubles point.

Texas-Pan American was also victorious at number four and five singles. At four, junior Jessica Brown (Sioux City, North HS) defeated Brandy Smith, 7-5, 6-2, and at five, junior Julie Fife (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) defeated Kristen Kraus, 6-2, 6-2.

“We came out and played well in the doubles, and I was pleased,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “Kathryn and Elysia played as well in doubles as they’ve played all year. Jessica played very well in singles. We hadn’t played in two weeks, and when you have that long a break, you don’t know how your team will respond. We set a goal of winning our last four matches. We’ve won two, and we hope to come out and play well against Corpus Christi next Saturday.”

The Lady Broncs improved to 5-14 with the victory. Centenary fell to 5-13 with the defeat. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next Saturday.
