WASLEN WINS AS RAIN HAMPERS TOURNAMENT PLAY

FORT WORTH, TX-Inclement weather got the better of one tennis tournament and severely hampered play in another that The University of Texas-Pan American was involved in Friday.

The Lady Broncs won one of four women's matches at the Omni Hotel Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Friday, while rain wiped out the entire first day of men's play at the University of Texas-San Antonio Invitational.

Sophomore Kathryn Waslen (Calgary, AB/West Island College) defeated Brooke Barringer of Louisiana-Monroe, 7-5, 7-6 in her first round match. Junior Julie Fife (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) lost to Eliza Young of Northwestern State (LA), 6-1, 6-3. Senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell/Laredo CC) fell to Jikka Vtrovcova of Texas-Arlington, 6-2, 6-2, and sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) lost to Nadia Vaughan of Southern Methodist, 6-0, 6-2.

"Kathryn played well, and served very well," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "I'm proud of the way she hung in there mentally and stayed tough, The match could have gone either way. It rained almost all day, so they are playing the whole tournament on five indoor courts and they've cancelled the consolation matches."

Waslen and both women's doubles teams will resume action Saturday.

The men's action is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday, weather permitting.
