Release: Saturday, October 19, 2002 BRONCS ADVANCE, LADY BRONCS OUT IN TENNIS SAN ANTONIO, TX-Five of six UTPA men's tennis players advanced, while the Lady Broncs completed play at their weekend tennis tournaments Saturday. Sophomore Kathryn Waslen (Calgary, AB/West Island College), who won her first-round match Friday, lost to ninth-ranked Ashley Hedberg of Texas A&M, 6-1, 6-0 at the Omni Hotels Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Tournament at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Waslen and teammate Julie Fife (Jr. Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) lost in doubles to Brooke Barringer and Kelly Bucewicz of Louisiana-Monroe, 8-1. UTPA's other doubles team, senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell/Laredo CC) and sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) lost to Emily Waters and Mali Purdy of TCU, 8-3. The consolation rounds were cancelled because of inclement weather. "Kathryn played hard, but she ran into a really tough opponent," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. The men's team, which was unable to play Friday at the Texas-San Antonio Invitational due to inclement weather, saw two players advance in championship singles and three others move on in consolation action Saturday. Freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) defeated Hetori Chaves of UTSA, leading 6-4, 2-0 when Chaves retired. He then downed Ricardo Almeida of UTSA, 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. Sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) got a first-round bye, then defeated Loren Collins of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-3, 6-3 and also earned a berth in the quarterfinals. Freshman Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) defeated Dennis Andrade of UTSA, 7-5, 7-5, and then lost to Eusebie Oprea of UTSA, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) defeated Brandon Silvester of UTSA, 6-4, 6-2, and then lost to Luis Moris of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Tom Mangleschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) lost to David Plasencia of TAMU-CC, 6-7, 7-6, (11-9), then defeated Simon Boyce of St. Edward's, 4-6, 7-6, (11-9). Freshman D.J. Zhanel (Ennis, TX/Ennis HS) lost to John Nallon of Texas A&M, 6-0, 6-1, and then fell to Gus Ganem of St. Edward's, 6-3, 6-4. The tournament will resume Sunday.
