Release: Friday, September 27, 2002 BEAUMONT, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team picked up four wins in singles and two in doubles on the opening day of the Lady Cardinal Invitational at Lamar University Friday. In doubles, the team of Alana Breen (So., Whistler, British Columbia/Whistler Secondary School) and Julie Fife (Jr., Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) defeated Melanie Medina and Michelle Wolfe of Lamar, 8-3, in the consolation semifinals after dropping their opening round match to Molly Reagan and April McCollough of LU, 8-3. Breen and Fife will face Nicole Solis and Adriana Garcia of Lee College in the Flight C consolation finals. In Flight A, the team of Elisabet Mateos (Jr., Barcelona, Spain/Laredo CC-Arnau Cadell HS) and Ana Pena (Fr., McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) opened doubles action by defeating Robin Singh and Susan Lindon of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-1, but dropped an 8-4 decision to Yessica Rizelia and Zdenka Puflerova of Southeastern Louisiana in the second round. In Flight B, Elysia Sloan (Fr. Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) and Jessica Brown (So., Sioux City, Iowa/North HS) dropped their opening match to Carolanne Lumsden and Magali Risoleo of McNeese State, 8-0, and also lost to Lindsey Burdin and Lara Alcubendas from Lee College, 8-6. The team of Kathryn Waslen (Fr., Calgary, Alberta/West Island College) and Laura Boskovich (Fr. San Jose, CA/St. Francis HS) fell to Elena Korbout and Paula Duncan of Lamar, 8-5, after dropping their opener to Katy Wallace and Alexandra Nieto of Nicholls State, 8-4. In singles action in Flight A, Pena dropped her opener to Zdenka Pulflerova from Southeastern Louisiana, 6-1 and 6-0, and lost her consolation match to Robin Houston of Stephen F. Austin, 6-3 and 6-3. Pena advanced to play Elena Korbout of LU. Waslen dropped her first match to Catalina Paz from Lamar, 6-2 and 6-3, then lost in the consolation bracket to Susan Lindon of Louisiana-Lafayette, 7-6 and 6-2. Mateos defeated Fernanda Kompatsher, 6-4 and 6-0, in her opener, but fell to Neolia Furno of McNeese State in the second round, 6-3 and 6-1. In Flight B, Brown dropped her opener to Marina Gando of McNeese State, 6-2 and 6-2, then fell to Gennon Houston of Stephen F. Austin in the second round, 6-3 and 6-2. Boskovich defeated April McCollough of Lamar, 1-3, 6-3, (10-8) in her first match, then fell to Carolanne Lumsden of McNeese State, 6-1 and 6-2 in the second round. In Flight C, Elysia Sloan (Fr., Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) picked up a win over Adriana Garcia of Lee College, 6-1, 7-6, then dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Sandra Wolfe of Stephen F. Austin in the second round. Fife fell 6-2 and 6-4 to Nicole Solis of Lee College, and dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Kara Loubser of McNeese State. Breen split a pair of matches, falling to Reagan of Lamar in the opener, 6-2, 6-2, but rebounding to take a 7-5, 6-2 decision of Jennifer Cline of SFA. "We played well, I was pleased with our overall performance," said Assistant Coach Elizabeth Middleton. "We were able to see what we need to work on for the spring." Action will continue Saturday.
