Release: Saturday, September 28, 2002 BEAUMONT, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team picked up three more wins while completing action on their final dayof action at the Lady Cardinal Invitational at Lamar University Saturday. In doubles, the team of sophomore Alana Breen (Whistler, British Columbia/Whistler Secondary School) and junior Julie Fife (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) dropped their match in the consolation finals of flight C, falling to Nicole Solis and Adriana Garcia of Lee College, 8-3. The Lady Broncs won three singles matches. Senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona,
Spain/Arnau-Cadell HS/Laredo CC) defeated Emily Voss of Stephen F. Austin,
6-3, 6-2 in her final consolation flight A match. Sophomore Kathryn
Waslen (Calgary, AB/West Island HS) also won in flight A, defeating
Fernanda Kompatscher of Louisiana-Lafayette, 5-7, 7-5, (10-4). Texas-Pan American sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) lost her flight A consolation match to Elena Korbout of Lamar, 6-3, 3-6, (10-6). In flight B, junior Jessica Brown (Sioux City, IA/North HS) lost to Alexandra Nieto of Northwestern State (LA), 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Laura Boskovich (San Jose, CA/St. Francis HS) lost to Yessica Rizelia of Southeastern Louisiana, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) lost to Emilia Prado of NSU, 6-2, 6-3, while Breen fell to Ashley Johnson of SFA, 6-1, 6-0. "I thought everyone played hard," said UTPA Assistant Coach Elizabeth Middleton. "They all gave their best effort. There are things we need to work on that kept us from being more successful, but we did well for our first tournament."
