LADY BRONCS FALL AT TAMU-CC

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's women's tennis team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3, at the H.E.B. Tennis Center Friday afternoon.

After losing the doubles point, the Lady Broncs took the lead in four of the singles matches by winning the first set. Lauren Schmidt of the Lady Islanders came from behind to defeat freshman Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville HS) in three sets at number five, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Texas-Pan American won three of the six singles matches. At number one, senior Elisabet Mateos (Barcelona, Spain/Arnau Cadell HS/Laredo CC) defeated Felice Sanchez, 6-0, 6-4. At number four, sophomore Ana Pena (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe HS) downed Jessica Martinez, 6-0, 7-5. At number six, junior Julie Fife (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos HS) defeated Kelsey Gist, 6-0, 6-3.

"We had our chances in the doubles, especially at one and three, but we weren't able to convert on our opportunities," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "We won the first set in four of the six singles, but we weren't able to come through. I'm disappointed with the loss, but we have to come back strong tomorrow, when we have two more matches."

The Lady Broncs fell to 2-6 with the defeat. They will play Sam Houston State and Southern at Corpus Christi Saturday.
