CERVANTES FIRST, BRONCS 2ND IN DUAL MEET

EDINBURG, TX – Sophomore Hugo Cervantes (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco HS) had his best day as a Bronc when the University of Texas-Pan American hosted Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a dual meet at the Ebony Hills Golf Course Friday.

Cervantes finished first in the 7, 728 meter men’s race in 26:13.12 as the Broncs finished in second place. The Islanders won the men’s race, 23 to 33.

The TAMU-CC women also defeated the Lady Broncs in the three-mile women’s race, winning 21 to 38. Senior Perla Rios-Handy (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte HS), who finished second in 17:58.30, was UTPA’s top finisher.

Junior Israel Arroyo (Houston, TX/Memorial HS) finished fifth overall for the Broncs, in 26:42.41.  Junior Martin Longoria (Edcouch, TX/Elsa-Edcouch HS) was 10th in 28:00.87, sophomore Esteban Reyna (San Antonio, TX) was 11th in 28:24.93), junior Roosevelt Campbell (Mission, TX/Mission HS) was 13th in 30:25.27, and junior Carlos Gallegos (McAllen, TX) was 15th in 32:50.27

Rios-Handy finished 8.59 seconds behind the winner, Bree Wilson of TAMU-CC. Freshman Maria Gonzalez (Elsa, TX/Edcouch-Elsa HS) was sixth in 19:35.34, sophomore Patty Villarreal (San Juan, TX/PSJA HS) was 10th in 10:15.06, freshman Claudia Rosas (Mission, TX/Mission HS) was 11th in 20:26.88, and sophomore Millie Martinez (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) was 17th in 26:09.38.

“I was really pleased with Hugo’s race,” said UTPA Head Coach Ricky Vaughn. “Three weeks ago, they had all of their top five runners finish ahead of us. For us to be within ten points of them is a big improvement. Hugo is starting to run really well.”

Vaughn was equally pleased with the women’s race. “As a team, we ran very well,” said Vaughn. “We’re still looking towards next weekend. Last time, they put five runners in front of our second person. We are running better each week, and we have improved significantly, and that’s what’s important.”

The Broncs and Lady Broncs will participate in the Region Championships next Saturday at Texas A&M.
