EDINBURG, TX-Hugo Cervantes (Sr./Weslaco, Texas/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) became the second UTPA Bronc to be named Independent Runner of the Week when he was chosen by a vote of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches Association Wednesday. Cervantes was honored for his performance at the Whataburger Invitational last weekend. Westly Keating (Jr./Pharr, Texas/Texas) had won the award for the week of Sept. 24.

Cervantes ran 5000 meters in 16:13 to finish fourth at the Whataburger Invitational in San Antonio last Friday. He was the top finisher for the Broncs as they won the meet by seven points over Texas-San Antonio. The NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches Association, which honored Cervantes, includes coaches from UC-Davis, Northern Colorado, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, Savannah State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Utah Valley State and Texas-Pan American.

"This will be a big boost for Hugo's confidence and ego," said UTPA Assistant Coach Doug Molnar. "Hugo has been working extremely hard this season. It's great to see all of that hard work paying off."

The Broncs will return to action at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Splash Friday evening.
